In India, it’s common for the family to be concerned and take action to ensure their children or siblings are happily married.
It was precisely with this intention that my brother-in-law registered his hardworking and busy brother on a matrimonial website.
I, of course, being the independent woman I was, even back then in 2004, registered on my own and started exploring the options.
So, initially, I wasn’t chatting with my spouse-to-be, but with my brother-in-law who was briefing me on my husband and the family.

I always thought it would pass me by…
I was practising yoga everyday, doing jal neti (a nasal cleanse), breathing exercises, meditating… Also, walking 45 minutes to an hour daily.
But when lightning strikes, it doesn’t give you a warning, does it?
So, here I am on day nine of my quarantine… In home isolation, tucked away from every place outside my room.
I finally feel like a yogi in my cave.
And, this is the truest spiritual test I must say — to stay locked up in four walls and not lose your mind or spirit!
My only moments…
Several people tell me how they sometimes feel low energy and wish to get out of that state and feel more energetic.
Being a practising yogi, I’ve realised that health often comes from discipline, moderation, and a sense of looking inward rather than outward.
Low levels of energy arise when we slip into patterns that don’t support optimal living — like irregular sleep hours, excessive food or drink consumption, and too much or too little physical activity.
Energy also gets depleted when we constantly worry about the future, regret past mistakes, or compare our life situation to that of another’s.
It’s in deep silence that all meditation begins… In complete stillness, when the mind becomes an empty container, willing to receive everything that comes its way.
As a writer too, I almost always never start with an idea in mind, perhaps just a vague thought… I simply allow the mind to receive and the hands to key in whatever comes naturally.
Sometimes the messages make sense… They stay, they provide insight. Sometimes they bring up old memories, or experiences, or the wisdom gained as a result of both.
At other times, the message is not very clear… A faint one…
Many I’ve spoken to this year feel that their lives are stuck, and not moving ahead in any clear direction.
I couldn’t help but wonder if this was a post-pandemic effect... Perhaps, some sort of post traumatic stress, or a lull after being in fight or flight mode for so long.
Either way, it’s a real feeling that isn’t going away anytime soon, unless we start working on it.
My friend said an interesting thing the other day — ‘While 2020 took away a lot of the negative from our life, it also took a lot of the positive.’
I’m trying my best to leave 2020 behind … To believe it was a nightmare that will not repeat itself.
But I can’t seem to do so; it has already reshaped me. It has transformed every pore of my being…it’s almost like I now wear a new set of clothes.
I don’t know if the transformation is regression or progression…I hope for my sake it’s the latter.
But, I do know that the transformation is complete, and there is no looking back.
The old way of life had long passed its sell by date… The lockdown was just the final…
Rework the beliefs that don’t work for you, but hold on to those that do!

Have you thought about how letting go of one belief can free you for life? And, similarly, how holding on to a belief can give you strength to keep walking?
Beliefs, like everything else, must be fluid...
They must evolve and take their own shape… Or, else, the buds of belief will never flower. Their ultimate form will never be realised.

As we stayed locked down in our homes, trying to fend away the virus and preserve our lives, we developed various coping mechanisms.
More importantly, the lockdown gave us time to introspect, and see what aspects of our personality needed work and what we needed to let go of.
